The British West Indies in World History by Eric Williams
Author
Williams, Eric Eustace,
Abstract:
The history of our West Indian islands. can be expressed in two simple words : Columbus and Sugar. Columbus, you all know the story, sailed West in order to reach the East. There were two very practical motives behind this voyage of d1scovery. Europe wanted to find a road to the East that was not dominated by the Venetians, who monopolized the Mediterranean route and charged exorbitant prices. In addition, the gold supply of Europe was being rapidly exhausted, so that it has been truly said of the Spanish discoverers that first they praised God and then they asked for gold. The West Indian islands were discovered, therefore, t0 assist in the solution of Europe’s problem. Thus they were, from the very beginning, an extension of Europe overseas.
