Statement by the Prime Minister Chairman of the Sixteenth Session of ECLA – Sixteenth Session Of The Economic Commission For Latin America Port of Spain, Trinidad And Tobago 6 – 14 May, 1975
Author
Williams, Eric Eustace,
Abstract:
Latin America does not need to be lectured on the urgency and gravity of the problem of the transnational corporation. Some of the outstanding abuses in this field have been brought to light by countries in this room and corrective measures have begun to be applied – in the field of import overpricing and the consequent loss to the developing countries of foreign exchange and tax revenue; in respect of false declaration of profits; in respect of double accounting of transnationals, a lower profit being declared to the developing country than to the parent country. Legislative steps have been taken, by individual countries and groups of countries, to ban new foreign investment in specific fields, and to restrict existing foreign investment by prescribing a fixed percentage of local participation.
