Our Fifth Annual Convention, to which I welcome all of you tonight, and to which it is my privilege to welcome, in your name, leaders of our sister parties, the People’s National Party of Jamaica, the Barbados Labour Party, the West Indian Federal Labour Party, convenes in the twelve-month period which marks the last year of our legislative term. It convenes, therefore, in election year. in the period which will mark the most decisive election in our history, the elections which will determine whether the decision of the electorate on September 24, 1956, was, as our enemies like to think, a mere flash in the pan, or was, rather, only the first stage in that control by a progressive political party which has characterised the contemporary history of Puerto Rico, Antigua, and, more recently, Jamaica.
