Constitution Reform: Speech by the Prime Minister in the House of Representatives. December 13th and 17th 1974
Author
Williams, Eric Eustace,
Abstract:
The Ministry of Home Affairs is replaced by a new Ministry of National Security under the Prime Minister.
The new Ministry embraces first and foremost the Defence Force, which is normally, in developing countries, under the control of the Prime Minister. Without prejudice to the current enquiry and future decisions on the Defence Force, a separate Commander
will be appointed for the Regiment, as there is a separate Commander for the Coast Guard. Colonel Serrette will remain Commander of the Defence Force, and will also serve as Military Adviser to the Prime Minister. In tribute to his outstanding service to the Nation in recent days, I am advising His Excellency the Acting Governor-General to promote him to the rank of Brigadier. I hope this will be some compensation to him for the scandalous reporting to which he has been subjected in some of the foreign Press in respect of the surrender of some of the Officers under his command. This was only a part of the denigration of our community and the distorted lies spread about us all over the world by the foreign mass media.
