Broadcast To The Nation on the 1968 Budget on the evening of January 5th, 1968

Title: Broadcast To The Nation on the 1968 Budget on the evening of January 5th, 1968
Author Williams, Eric Eustace,
Abstract: Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen:
Most of you will have heard by now some of the main points I made in my Budget Speech for 1968, which I presented to the House of Representatives this afternoon. What will no doubt have struck most of you most forcibly is the fact that personal income tax rates have been lowered, while taxes on several articles of consumption have been increased. This evening I would like to explain to you why the Government has taken these steps. In recent years we in Trinidad and Tobago, in comparison with most developing countries, have been enjoying a high and unprecedented level of prosperity which has been widely spread throughout most parts of the country and throughout most income groups. I shall not quote statistics to you in support of this point: I merely rely upon your observation of things around you.
