Abstract: We are gathered together here today to participate in the special launching of a new industry in Trinidad and Tobago. It is a shoe factory, initially employing 65 persons and twice as many by the end of 1976, with a capital investment of $1.7 million, geared to produce 250
pairs of shoes a day, the number rising to 1,000 pairs per day by 1978. The company is wholly locally owned but has an arrangement with a well-known United Kingdom manufacturer, Charles Horrell Shoes Ltd., where its first technicians have been trained, to supply technical expertise and know-how, The company will specialise in the manufacture of high quality men’s shoes for the domestic and Caribbean markets, but aims at exporting 50% of its output by mid 1976 to Europe, USA and Canada.
